Chapter Thirteen

Nash and Dylan were at the large desk in his apartment, going over the latest spreadsheets he’d been able to download. Dani and Mavis were working with her, though she’d emailed them nothing. They were working strictly with paper, even with Nash’s assurances. Dylan leaned in to look closer and her hand rested on his shoulder as her breast brushed his arm. Breathe, moron!

She wasn’t doing it on purpose, not like women in bars he was accustomed to. Grabbing her up and throwing her on his bed would not be appreciated, well, not by her. He and certain parts of him would be thrilled. No, she liked him and trusted him. That was important. Yes, he was going to push for another kiss, but not more... tonight.

They were both startled at the heavy knock on the door of her apartment. She had no idea the sound would be so noticeable over here.

“Dylan! Open up.” Russell’s voice was loud and demanding and sounded possibly impaired.

“That’s him, isn’t it?” Nash whispered.

She nodded. “I didn’t realize how well you could hear everything at my door in here.”

He pounded on her door again.

“Maybe I should see what he wants.” She straightened up.

“No way. Not from his tone of voice. Let me check.”

“You don’t have to—”

“Please?”

After a second, she nodded and moved to where Russell wouldn’t see her when he looked inside, and he would look in here.

At another pounding, Nash yanked the door open, after ensuring she was not visible to the outside. “What the hell, man?”

“None of your business.”

“It’s the whole hall’s business at this point. Besides, she’s not home.”

“What do you mean?”

“Which word did you not understand?” Nash stepped closer, using his size to intimidate. He’d done it before and knew just how scary he could look.

Russell did take a step back, almost involuntarily Nash thought, before seeming to realize it. “How do you know she’s not home?”

“Because I heard her leave.”

“Where is she? Where was she going?”

Nash just stared at him for a long moment. “My first guess would be earth, northern hemisphere. Shit, do you want me to check some sort of sign out sheet? How the hell should I know? It’s none of my business where she goes. Have you been drinking?”

Russell ignored his question. “Her car’s here.”

“So, maybe a friend picked her up or she planned to get blotto at some bar and decided a cab would be safer. I’m not her babysitter. Now stop pounding on the freakin’ door. You wake up that damn yappy terrier down the hall and I’ll make you eat him.”

Russell took another step back, then turned away and took the elevator down without another word.

Nash closed the door and turned toward his apartment and Dylan.

Dylan was leaning against the wall, supporting herself as she shook helplessly with silent laughter.

“What?”

“The visual of you making him eat some non-existent dog,” she gasped, wiping her eyes. “That was beautiful.”

Nash rolled his eyes at her, but he was grinning as well. “That’s about the most fun I’ve had since I got back.
